1952年	浜松市生まれ
1977年	東京芸術大学工芸家 錬金専攻卒業。
1979年	同大学大学院修了。アートやデザインの分野に進む。

EARLY CAREER

1979年	コレクターズコレクション社で企画・プロデュースに携わる
1983年	イッセイミヤケ・ボディワークス展(東京、ロサンゼルス、サンフランシスコ展)の会場構成デザインを担当 ブライアン・イーノの初来日を企画、ビデオインスタレーションを担当。また、同時期にデザインしたクロックが世界的ヒットとなる。その後、自身のデザイン事務所セッサを設立。時計を中心としたプロダクトと空間デザインを進める
1980年	銀座コバヤシ画廊、東京都美術館、原美術館などでインスタレーション作品を発表し、デザインとアートの両側面から活動を展開
1992年	浜松町で500席の大型レストラン・ザ・ガーデンのアートディレクションを担当
1996年	スイス・ALFEX社にてウォッチデザインを発表
2000年	フランス・レクソン社のプロダクトデザイン開始
2012年	奈良市・帝塚山大学・居住空間デザイン科・教授に就任。後進の育成に尽力
2017年	同大学を退社。その後、不慮の事故により長期療養となる
2025年	KATO DESIGN STUDIO としてデザイン活動を再開

クーパーヒューイットデザインミュージアムにて「テープディスペンサー」と「デスククロック」の2点が永久保存。

PROFILE

Born in Hamamatsu, Japan, in 1952.
Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1979.
Has worked across art and design ever since.

EARLY CAREER

1979: Produced the “Collector’s Collection” clocks.
Also planned and directed exhibitions and video installations, including a project with Brian Eno.
Later founded his own design office, focusing on clocks and product design.

ART＆DESIGN

From the 1980s, presented installation works at Ginza Kobayashi Gallery, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, and the Hara Art Museum. His practice spans both design and art.
In interior design, in 1992 he was responsible for the total art direction of The Garden, a 500-seat restaurant in Hamamatsucho (Tokyo).

INTERNATIONAL WORKS

1996: Watch designs for ALFEX (Switzerland).
2000: Began product design for LEXON (France).

TEACHING/CURRENT

2012–2017: Professor of Residential and Spatial Design at Tezukayama University (Nara).
From 2025: Continues activities as KATO DESIGN STUDIO.

AWARDS

Received the Good Design Award five times.
1985: Works including the tape dispenser and desk clock entered the permanent collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (New York).
